Butchies, the much-loved Broadway Market outfit, will bring their fried chicken sandwiches to Shoreditch and will open on Monday 27 November 2017. They will give away 500 free fried chicken sandwiches from opening until they’re gone.
Opening on the former site of Santo Remedio, Garrett and Emer FitzGerald’s concept will make the leap from street food favourite to bricks-and-mortar operator with a counter-style service model, offering both dine-in and takeaway — a boon in an area heaving with people looking for good, interesting food at lunchtime.
As with the stall, provenance and quality leads the operation: slow-reared free-range chickens from Somerset will be cooked in a pressure fryer specially imported from the US. The menu promises sandwiches like The Original, at £6 with aioli and house pickles, and Cheesy Rider, which promises Pineapple Reaper Sauce and Red Leicester at £8. Fries (with or without cheese) and Kimchi Honey-Butter Wings round off the food menu. 20 craft beers will sit alongside shakes, cocktails and wine, with named breweries including Dalston microbrewery 40FT and Tottenham’s Beavertown, with Sandow’s cold brew coffee also featuring.

The Butchies journey started at Broadway Market in 2014 with the intention of creating the ultimate fried chicken sandwich for London. There was a brief interlude at Camden Market in 2015 — casting doubt on to what extent this is truly their first permanent site — but Rivington Street looks to be their home for the future. The husband and wife team were inspired by recent New York fried chicken offerings, such as David Chang’s Fuku in New York. With their multi-award winning sandwich, Butchies strive to deliver the ultimate, higher welfare product at a mass market price point. Sandwiches start at £6.
The restaurant will offer counter style service for both dine-in and takeaway, making it a handy pit-stop for local office workers in the Old Street area, as well as those looking for a more relaxed yet affordable dinner. The menu will also feature a range of wings, sides, salads, specials, homemade pickles/hot-sauce, shakes, cocktails, wine and an extensive list of over 20 craft beers.
Like their site’s former tenants, Santo Remedio, Butchies have worked with CODE Hospitality on the development of their new restaurant. Co-owner Garrett Fitzgerald told Eater London:
Packing in the desk job to start Butchies 4 years ago has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Bigger queues combined with selling out earlier and earlier each week at Broadway Market made us realise we were on to something really special. It’s been a wild ride and we are outrageously excited about this huge step. Having lived and worked in East London for the past 10 years, it is amazing to be giving our award winning fried chicken a permanent home in our own backyard.
Butchies will open at 22 Rivington Street.
