The seafood-focused street food business, Claw, have found a permanent site in Soho’s Carnaby — the restaurant is scheduled to open this October. It has been announced that the restaurant will now open on 14 December, two months later than first thought.

Fabian Clark, the business’s owner, founded Claw two years ago after he discovered that Britain exports approximately 80% of its crab to the rest of Europe and Asia “rather than enjoying the bountiful benefits of our large coastline here at home.”

Clark has made efforts to change the perception “that seafood is an expensive luxury.” He’s said that when buying British, “there is no reason why we can’t eat fresh, quality seafood on a daily basis.” Claw deals directly with fishermen, cutting out the middlemen “to ensure that they receive the best produce, but also keeps costs down.”

Claw’s menu is “a homage to the best of coastal Britain,” created by Clark and his head chef Josh Levy. Though the majority of the dishes are designed to celebrate British shorelines, there are meat dishes and vegetarian options, too.

The operators have plans for breakfast, but not at the outset. When it does, in the new year, dishes will include: bacon and scallop muffin; herb and mustard potato hash; and chilli scrambled eggs with crab and samphire.

[Update 13 November] New dishes announced include: Crab beignets with crab mayonnaise; fried chicken and caviar; squid bolognese ‘Sloppy Joe’; onglet, smoked sweet potato and gremolata (to share); roast cauliflower with spelt and tofu yoghurt; and toasted milk parfait, sour toffee and gingersnap. As well as the previously announced crab mac and cheese; pork stuffed squid with makrut lime; duck nuggets; trout poke; and fried chicken with cod’s roe.

The team has also plan to include “cult” signatures to takeaway — the Claw crab roll; bacon and scallop muffin; and Claw’s lobster roll.

For the past two years Claw has traded at markets in London, and festivals across the UK, with pop-ups at various restaurants and bars. Most recently, they’ve run a take-away site from inside a shipping container on Finsbury Avenue Square in the City.

Claw will is scheduled to open in October at 21 Kingly Street, London W1B 5QA.

11 to 13 December: 50% off all food.
