Venue for World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 revealed
The 2019 World’s 50 Best Restaurants award ceremony will be held in Singapore. The controversial restaurant awards, which has recently come under scrutiny for its reproduction of unequal power structures, currently lists four London restaurants: Lyle’s, The Clove Club, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, and The Ledbury. Clare Smyth, recently awarded two Michelin stars, currently holds its ‘World’s Best Female Chef’ title, but her restaurant, Core, has no place on the list.
Dandelyan wins World’s Best Bar, is closing
Ryan Chetiyawardana and Iain Griffiths’ celebrated London cocktail bar took home first place at World’s 50 Best Bars last night. The thing is, it’s closing.
The next restaurant in the Roux dynasty opens today
Caractère, by Emily Roux and Diego Ferrari, opens in Notting Hill today 4 October. In news described as “the secret,” Diego is in fact the head chef — as reported in every press release up to this point — with Emily running front of house.
Former St. John chef opens restaurant at Hackney arts centre
Earth Kitchen (EartH Kitchen) at Earth (EartH) will open under former St. John chef Chris Gillard. Expect dishes with more than a touch of the St. John identity, including griddled ox heart, mackerel with beetroot and horseradish, and a range of very steamed, very British puddings.
Filipino restaurant and bar will open in Hoxton
Kinilaw and Buko will bring kinilaw and buko to Hoxton. Kinilaw — literally “eaten raw” — is the Filipino iteration of ceviche-style curing, using palm or cane vinegar and calamansi juice to sour and tenderise fish, meat or vegetables. Buko, meanwhile, means coconut, which here will act as a shell for vegan ice cream.
