Yes, Greggs Steak Bakes Are Now Available Via Deliveroo

The British high street bakery giant moves to trial food delivery

Three Greggs locations in London are now available via restaurant delivery giant, Deliveroo.

The London trial follows a “successful” recent trial in Birmingham. It is the first time that baked goods — including the iconic steak bake and iced bun — have been available via delivery.

The timing is curious. Uber Eats, Deliveroo’s closest rival (and apparent suitor), today announced a partnership with a similarly cult (food) brand. Ikea’s meatballs, not known as featuring at the very top of fine food charts, occupy a special place in Britain’s food story. So does Greggs. It is revered with nostalgia, loved for its affordability, and praised for its consistency. And with that, the two most ambitious restaurant delivery brands in the U.K. have decided to go big with news of the acquisition of two non-restaurant brands.

The real story here: Just the start of Deliveroo and Uber Eats engaging in an ongoing battle of exclusive-deal one-upmanship.

Nonetheless, it will do numbers.

The Greggs menu on Deliveroo will feature: breakfast, freshly ground coffee, savouries and sausage rolls, freshly-prepared sandwiches, salads, and sweet pastries (plus meal deal options.)

For Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, it’s about convenience for an increasingly time-poor customer: “When it comes to food-on-the-go, our customers tell us that convenience is key. We’ve been working hard to make Greggs available to our customers when and where they want it, whether that be in offices, industrial estates, retail parks, travel hubs, and at home.

“We’ve been working on our delivery services over the past year and we’re excited to launch a Deliveroo trial for our customers in London. This will enable customers to enjoy our great tasting, good value food wherever they are, offering them the ultimate convenience.”

Joe Groves at Deliveroo, said that the delivery company had acquired an “icon” and made sure to wedge in the brand’s key messaging on delivery timing: “Gregg’s is an icon of the British high street, we know Deliveroo customers are going to love getting their favourite bakes and bites delivered to them in under 30 mins.”

Greggs’ locations on Deliveroo include:

  • 243 Whitechapel Road, E1 1DB
  • 143 Strand, WC2R 1JA
  • 164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP
