Eater Talks: What Is cultural appropriation?
Wednesday, 8 May — 7:00 p.m.
Eater London and the Ace Hotel will continue their ongoing food and restaurant industry discussion series this month.
During the 90-minute discussion, chefs and restaurant owners based in London will join host Adam Coghlan for a conversation on cultural appropriation: The malpractice of dominant cultures profiting from the traditions of other cultures while those cultures are unable to do the same.
While this definition might be accepted among members and observers of the restaurant industry in theory, in practice it remains too often misunderstood, misconstrued, or plainly dismissed when contended.
At this Eater Talk, panelists Zoe Adjonyoh of Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, Crispin Somerville, co-founder of El Pastor, Mandy Yin from Sambal Shiok, Sirachai Kularbwong of Singburi, and Iré Hassan Odukale managing director and co-founder of Ikoyi, will discuss what is and isn’t appropriative, why it matters, and why it is less about who cooks what and more about how they do it.
This Eater London x Ace Hotel discussion will take place on Wednesday, 8 May from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost £15, and include one drink.
