Welcome back to Insta Stories, a column examining the London restaurant scene through the often-problematic medium of Instagram. This week’s filter is asymmetry lunch.

News of the week

It’s British Sandwich Week for a few more delirious days yet, so there may still be some fine examples to come. (Start here.) But at the midpoint, it almost feels like we’re in danger of overlooking what is — per the British Sandwich and Food to Go Association — “the greatest food to go and quite possibly the most iconic British culinary invention.” Could it be that Insta-citizens are finally growing bored of weeks themed around specific foodstuffs? Participate in National Themed Week Fatigue Week to find out!

Must-visit exhibition of the week

It’s taken a while, but Britain is finally starting to consider food as more than just stuff to eat — as the post-rationing hangover finally starts to lift, we are opening up to the notion that it can be a cultural phenomenon every bit as worthy of study and consideration as music, cinema, or art. The exhibition Food: Bigger than the Plate at the V&A therefore feels like a watershed moment in this regard — more of this, please!

Incoming ingredient of the week

First it was the wild garlic, then the asparagus. Now look out for elderflower blossom as the seasonal accent du jour — a surprisingly versatile addition to both sweet and savoury dishes. Though deep-fried is best, obvs.
