The Gregg’s vegan sausage roll is a valuable hot item
Bakery juggernaut and possible national treasure Gregg’s is moving some serious money, and it’s hailed the vegan sausage roll that captured the nation’s imagination and enraged click-bait machine Piers Morgan for its steep rise in profit. Gregg’s’ numbers for the first half of 2019 see total sales up 14.7 percent, to £546 million, and underlying pre-tax profit up from £25.7 million at this stage in 2018 to £40.6 million. Like everyone else, the chain is concerned about the impact of a “disorderly” no-deal Brexit, but the message is clear: “Exceptionally strong trading built on the successful end to 2018, and helped by the popularity of the new vegan-friendly sausage roll.” It’s another win for hot items.
