Just Eat Snaffles Greggs Delivery Deal Days After Agreeing £5.9 Billion Takeover

Greggs has ditched its Deliveroo delivery trial to put its sausage rolls and steak bakes on wheels with Just Eat. The delivery partnership, which builds on the back of successful trials in 2019 and the growing clamour for its vegan renditions of the aforementioned products, with top-selling delivery items including, yes, the sausage roll, vegan sausage roll, and steak bake, according to the Guardian.

The timing — both for Just Eat and Deliveroo — is interesting. While Just Eat rides high on the back of a protracted £5.9 billion with Dutch magnate Takeaway.com, Deliveroo’s proposed investment from Amazon is subject to an in-depth investigation from the Competition and Markets Authority. That investigation has blunted Deliveroo’s ability to generate capital — as with many companies of its ilk, with Uber the most prominent example, it runs at a loss and relies on investor attraction for stability — with Amazon reportedly offering a loan to keep the company not quite afloat, but certainly on calmer waters.

Delivery will initially be available in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow, with a £1.50 fee — that’s more than an individual sausage roll, but customers are reportedly ordering in multiples to offset the cost.

More soon.
