With the government’s “eat out to help out” scheme coming in from Monday 3 August, London restaurants are signing up to offer a capped 50 percent discount, up to £10 per head. There is now a postcode checker available to diners who want to find out which restaurants near them are participating, with some London restaurants offering specific deals when the discount wouldn’t make a major dent in the menu. Self-described purveyor of the “best steak and chips in Britain” Hawksmoor is introducing a £20 steak and chips deal so that it comes in at £10; some chains, including Carluccio’s, are extending the discount to 50 percent off everything, though only for the Monday — Wednesday on which the voucher applies. (Used on its own, the discount cannot be applied to alcoholic drinks.)
While the early days of uptake were largely confined to some of the country’s largest restaurant chains, in recent days more and more of London’s essential restaurants and best-value restaurants have signed up. Even some Michelin-starred restaurants are specially adapting their menus to make the discount go further.
Find out which London restaurants are participating here, and with the scheme only available for eating in, it’s also worth considering whether a dining room or an outdoor space is the best option right now. And come back on Monday, for a map of some of the best restaurants and deals around the city.
