15 Rad Places to Celebrate Thanksgiving in London

Find turkey, pumpkin pie, marshmallows and more on this side of the Atlantic — or, just eat modern American food

View as Map

There’s a school of thought that says that Londoners shouldn’t be celebrating American holidays; that Halloween and Thanksgiving — Thursday 28 November — and all the rest have just been transplanted here by cultural imperialists and retailers looking to capitalise on the sort of FOMO-driven mania that surrounds end-of-year festivities.

While there’s certainly an element of truth to that argument, London is a city of expats, and there’s nothing that expats like more than the sense of comfort that comes with celebrating an abandoned, somewhat problematic national holiday under a veil of irony. Thanksgiving, luckily, is also just a good excuse to get friends and family around the table for a party, so here are 15 great places around London to do just that.

Balthazar was born in New York 20 years ago, and it’s pulling out the stops for Thanksgiving, with a traditional feast for lunch or dinner on 28 November in London. Settle into the brasserie seating and start out with a gingerbread fizz before getting stuck into the £55 three-course menu of Thanksgiving classics. Spiced roasted butternut squash soup with corn bread from last year is the same, and precedes the required roast turkey with orange and chestnut stuffing and all the trimmings. Christopher's

Christopher’s isn’t holding back this Thanksgiving. A £65 per head three-course menu warrants some serious consideration — sweet potato and blackbean chowder or carrot and cumin souffle or seared Orkney scallops? More choices are in the form of slow-cooked ballotine of organic turkey or Missouri-rubbed rack of lamb or chickpea, eggplant and autumn truffle casserole? Whichever way one goes, chocolate pecan pie sounds like the right way to finish. Or perhaps pumpkin pie?

Sea Containers London

Another glam hotel restaurant taking on the Thanksgiving feast, Sea Containers is keeping things simple with a three-course menu of dishes like butternut squash with manchego, chestnut, chorizo salad; roast bronze turkey with apricot stuffing, Thanksgiving trimmings; and pecan and apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and maple jus. £46 for three courses and a vegetarian menu is available on request.

Red Rooster Shoreditch

Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster is one of London’s most interesting American restaurants, and this year’s Thanksgiving menu offers chicken and waffles first up — or break the mould with yellowtail ceviche. Two Lights

Two Lights’ Thanksgiving menu is a fitting representation of chef Chase Lovecky’s approach to American cuisine — trad with a touch of rad. Herb-roasted turkey takes a straightforward look at the centrepiece, but smoked butter carrots and miso creamed potatoes take things in a fresher direction. Pies — served to share — are likely to be formidable.

Goodman Mayfair

It’s no surprise that Goodman, one of London’s biggest steak restaurants, offers a choice between ribeye and sirloin for its Thanksgiving mains instead of the customary turkey, with a choice of two sides — between roasted pumpkin, bacon, mashed potato, green beans and hand cut chips — and ends with a Bourbon pecan pie, at £55 per person across all sites.

The Cleveland Arms

Thanksgiving is one day only at The Cleveland Arms in Paddington, with a three-course set menu including an intriguing honey mustard sprout slaw with quail’s eggs, roasted turkey (duh) with caramelised apples (okay), and a pecan pie at dessert (fair enough). £30 per person sounds like good value.

Elliot Cunningham is building a reputation for serious barbecue cooking in Hackney, and a Thanksgiving slate of whole, slow-smoked turkey and sweet potato pies should be a serious showcase for his skills. Either sit down to feast with friends, or take away, reheat in the oven, and tell the world that barbecue is a cinch. Maybe not the last part.
